I learnt to use this web tool (voki) after I attended a Webinar Initiated by www.iTDi.pro. Ozge from Turkey introduced us some web tools we can use in class. I was thankful and blessed that I attended this event since I have got a brand new experience using this web tools and the students seem to enjoy it.I suggested my students use this web tool when we discussed new Target language. It's fun and highly suggested.

HISTORY

The word "cublak" means guessing game while the word suweng means earrings. This game is  originally from East Java created by one  of  “Wali Songo” named  Sheikh Maulana Ainul or commonly known as Sunan Giri. He  spread the religion of Islam in Indonesia, particularly the island of Java.

GAME
FEATURES

This game is played by 5-7 people with ages ranging from 6-14 years. For those who are  6-9  years old, they are  considered as still learning, while for the age 10-14 years are  to train their younger siblings. It also  requires an equipment such as suweng (Earring)


HOW TO PLAY

The game is played by some children / people, but at least three people,
preferably between six to eight people. The purpose of this game is that Pak Empo (one who has to play) finds an earring (suweng) hidden by someone.

First, a few people get together and draw / choose one of them to become Pak Empo” usually by pingsut (Paper Rock, and Scissors game) or regular lottery. Once there is a role as “Pak Empo”, they all sit in a circle while “Pak Empo lies face down on his hands in the middle of them. Each person puts his/her palms facing upwards on the back of “Pak Empo.
One of them takes an object (originally an earring) then they all sing together rolling the objects from one palm to the others until the song is sung several times (usually 2-3 times).
When reaching the last verse , “Pak Empo” stands  up and other players pretend to hold the object in their left and right hands as if grasping something tightly closed. This is to outwit Pak Empo who is looking for his/her object (earring). Each player holds up their fingers and rubs the right and left index finger just like slicing  ​​chilly. They all keep singing repeatedly until “Pak Empo chooses one hiding the object (earring). The role switches if the guess is true.

The Use In EFL
This Game includes Physical activities  which we can use / modify as Time Filler, Warmer or Game for Practicing a Target language. We can also teach these expressions such as: guess, hide, whose turn, next etc. I often use this game a warmer. The one who has to play needs to guess correctly or /she needs to spell vocabulary discussed last meeting or answer questions. Of course we can change the song to any English Children Songs. Lots of Fun.

1. REINVENTING INDONESIAN TRADITIONAL GAME IN TEACHING ENGLISH
A. CINGCIRIPIT

In
West Java(Sunda), Indonesia. There are  lot of children's games called kaulinan budak. Many of the games should begin by looking for players who should be guardian cat or ucing   or ucing sumput bancakan.

Now, to decide who would be
ucing”,  there are several ways that can be used, such as pulling a grass of a pile  of grasses held by a player, one of which was given a knot. A player who gets a knotted grass should start the game.

Another way is to put the  index finger of one hand into the palm of the game master. After all the participants put
their index finger, then they begin singing cingciripit:

Cingciripit, tulang bajing kacapit,
kacapit ku bulu paré,
bulu paré seuseuketna,
jol, pa’ dalang mawa wayang, Jékjéknong !

Meaning:
Cingciripit, squashed squirrel bones,
pinched by the
reed,
 sharp
reed,
Jol,
Puppeteer bring puppets, Jékjéknong!

At Jékjéknong words, all participants must be ready to pull his finger, if pinched or caught by the game master, then he would be
the one who has to play the game.


The use in EFL
1. This game can be modified to decide who needs to answer a question, Spell a word, or start any game. The song , of course, can be changed to any English children Songs or simply by saying A, B, C, One, Two, Three.

2. REINVENTING INDONESIAN TRADITIONAL GAME IN EFL
 HOMPIMPAH AND PINGSUT


In Indonesian traditional children's games or Dolanan, before a game is in progress, first we need to play  lottery game to determine who is entitled to start playing. The system used is Pingsut and Hompimpah. Both systems are used to determine who loses and who wins, just by using your fingers and the palm of our hands.

A. PINGSUT

Pingsut  is  Indonesian version of "Paper rock and Scissors  Game" . There are two players playing this game pitting their fingers (thumb, index finger and pinkie/small finger) according to its symbol . The rule is that the thumb is a symbol of the elephant. The symbol of human is  index finger. Pinkie/ the small finger is  symbol of ants. Pinkie (Ants) will be defeated by Index Finger (Man). Index Finger (Man) is  beaten by elephants. The thumb (Elephants) is defeated by the pinkie/small finger (ants)
The use in EFL
1. This game can  used to decide who has to answer a question/start the other game such as Tic Tac Toe, Snake and Ladder or  Spelling Bee, Human Ludo or other games we play.


 
HOMPIMPAH


Hompimpah is a game played by more than two people. Players need to toss the hands while singing a song ( in EFL , we can change it to any English Children song) then show the palms up or down. The winners are decided by the least people who show the "up or down" palms. If there are only two players left, the winner is  decided by Pingsut (Paper, Rock and scissors Game).
THE USE IN EFL
We can use this game either to decide who has to start playing game, decide a group or a partner or to play Phonics game. Students toss their fingers and then  count the fingers using the  letters of the alphabet ( A,B,C so on)  then they need to say a word beginning with such letter . For example : Z. Students have to say a word beginning with Z e.q: Zero, Zebra, Zinc etc.
